I probably couldn’t tell you why my favorite place became the beach. There is not a specific event in my past that reminds me that it’s a good place. It’s just a feeling I get when I’m there that I cannot attain anywhere else. There is a sense of peace and calm and contentment that is never quite with me in any other place.
It can be any shore: The ocean, a lake, a gulf, a river, a stream. It doesn’t matter, as long as water meets the land it is the same.
It excites my curiosity in a way no other place does. There are interesting things everywhere, but nothing is as interesting as even the sand along the shore.
I had forgotten all of this. In the course of the 21 years, I forgot this part of myself, just as I forgot all the other parts of myself. I rediscovered it by accident when I took the kids to San Luis Obispo last year. And in doing so I began to rediscover myself. To do so as my kids discovered the beach for the first time was a blessing.
