Day 5: Home

homeless-family(This is part of 31 Days of Five Minute Writing)

One of the leading causes of homeslessness among women and children is domestic abuse. Many women stay in abusive relationships because they have no other resources, no place to go. Abusers know this and use it to their advantage.

People are often shocked that Zelena won’t sign the child support agreement. I’m not sure why. I want to ask, “What? Haven’t you been paying attention? He’s abusive. If he didn’t care for us when I was married to him, why would he now?” And because people still don’t get it, that, yes, there are men that evil that they’d rather see their ex-wife and children living on the streets than to pay one penny in child support or alimony, I will continue to speak out about it.

In my case, I have no idea where we’ll live. We have more than just Zelena’s abusive nature against us. We have the age of my oldest, 18, most women’s shelters will not allow an 18yo boy to live there. We have the size of our family, most programs will allow five people, but not six.

Someone asked me the other day if I had a car to live in. I said yes, but then I realized I won’t because I won’t be able to pay the insurance or the registration.

Abusers use a woman’s lack of resources to try to force her to stay with him. It happens time and time again. Zelena is not unique, he is not even original, he is just like every abusive man on the planet. There is nothing special about him. Just like all the other abusers he works to destroy the people he verbally claims to love, in any way possible. I can’t expect anything more of him.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Each day I will link to a pertinent article on DV. Today’s link is about DV and homelessness.
